What if you knew there was one intervention that would increase:
- focus and attention - mood levels
- time on task - self esteem
- engagement - school attendance
- a higher level of thinking
WOULD YOU TRY IT?
WHAT IS ACTIVE START?
Active Start is a program developed by a group of early years educators within the Pembina Trails School Division that were intrigued by the results of very recent research connecting physical activity to increased school engagement and academic achievement. Programs began in 2010 to revolutionize the way a regular school day begins.
Active Start allows students and staff to begin the first 15-35 minutes of their school day with movement! This movement can range from activities lead by the physical education teacher in the gym, whole school walk/runs outside (or inside!), or even dancing and playing games in the classroom to start the day off right!
Since Active Start programs began teachers, education assistants, administrators and clinicians alike have seen remarkable decreases in a number of common childhood anxieties.
Decreases in impulsive decision making, depression, anxiety, restlessness, anger, and aggression by students have all been noted since the introduction of an Active Start program. Not to mention, students love the chance to be active and get some extra socialization in before the day begins!
